Are you making 1 of these mistakes?

We all make mistakes...

But when it comes to holding space for transformation and change, some mistakes can quietly sabotage your energy, your presence, and your ability to lead.

Over the years, I’ve seen it again and again, smart, intuitive, heart-led coaches and healers unintentionally bypassing the very thing that would make their work more sustainable and impactful: true nervous system regulation.

So let’s dive into the five biggest regulation mistakes I see coaches, healers, facilitators, and teachers make, and what to do instead.

1. Giving your clients and students more things to do while they’re frazzled, instead of teaching them how to regulate first.

When someone’s nervous system is already in overdrive, piling on new tools, habits, or strategies can actually deepen the dysregulation. It creates more pressure, not more peace. What they really need first is a way to come back into their body; to downshift, soften, and access internal safety.

Regulation is the foundation for action, not a reward for getting things done. When you teach your clients how to regulate first, they gain access to clarity, creativity, and capacity, and they start moving from grounded momentum instead of scattered panic.

2. Teaching regulation as a list of things to do, rather than a state of being.

Too often, regulation is presented like a checklist: breathe, journal, cold plunge, stretch, meditate. But true regulation isn’t about ticking boxes, it’s about the quality of presence you bring to any moment. You can do breathwork and still be bracing inside. You can journal and still be dissociating.

When you embody regulation as a felt experience, it becomes contagious. Your clients pick it up not because you told them to, but because they felt it in the way you hold space.

3. Thinking Yoga Nidra is just a meditation practice, and treating it like one.

Yoga Nidra is often misunderstood as just another relaxation or mindfulness tool. But it's so much more than that. It’s a scientifically supported method of non-sleep deep rest (NSDR), used to shift brainwave states, rewire subconscious patterns, and deeply regulate the nervous system.

When taught properly, Yoga Nidra isn’t just restful, it’s revelatory. It’s not something you casually toss in at the end of a class. It’s a full-spectrum practice that can anchor your entire system. Treating it like a throwaway or passive meditation means missing its deepest power, and depriving your clients of the transformation it can truly offer.

4. Confusing emotional processing with nervous system regulation.

Crying, venting, or having a cathartic release feels like something is happening, and sometimes it is. But emotional expression doesn’t automatically equal regulation. You can cry and still be dysregulated. You can scream into a pillow and still feel disconnected from safety.

Nervous system regulation is about returning to a baseline of safety and connection, not just expressing emotion. If you’re not teaching your clients how to actually come back home to themselves after activation, you’re skipping a crucial step.

5. Thinking regulation is just for your clients and not embodying it yourself.

This is the big one. You can’t fake nervous system safety. Your energy leads before your tools ever will. If you’re burnt out, rushing, people-pleasing, or holding space from a place of depletion, your clients feel it, even if they don’t have the language for it.

Regulation isn’t something you just teach. It’s something you live. And the more you embody that grounded, regulated presence, the more your work becomes magnetic, effective, and sustainable, not because you’re doing more, but because you are more resourced.
